Art has always existed beyond rules. Long before the first brushes made of bamboo or horsehair came into being, human beings would dip their fingers into pigment and leave traces on cave walls – and that was genuine creativity, imbued with living, immediate contact with the material.
Today, when the shelves of art shops overflow with tools to suit every taste, many beginners believe that without the “right” set of brushes there is no point in attempting the work at all. This is one of the most widespread misconceptions in the world of fine art.
Every year, hundreds of adults take a step they have been putting off for a long time – they sign up for art courses. Some come after seeing someone else’s work and feeling the urge: “I want to do that too.” Others arrive after a divorce, a move, retirement, or simply a moment when they realise: there is something missing from their lives – something of their own, quiet and profound. Some dream of learning to paint a portrait of someone they love and have no idea where to begin.
But almost all of them come with the same hidden question: “Am I not too late?”.
A portrait is not simply a likeness of a face. It is a conversation between the artist and the viewer, conducted not through words but through shades of colour, forms and textures.
When you first pick up a brush and attempt to capture a living face on canvas, the hardest part is not proportions or anatomy. The hardest part is breathing genuine feeling into the painted person. It is precisely this ability that separates a work that hangs on a wall as decoration from one that stops a passer-by in their tracks and holds them before the canvas for minutes on end.
A portrait is not simply a depiction of a face. It is an attempt to look into a person’s soul – to convey their character, mood, and individuality through lines and colours. When you first set out to create a portrait, it may seem incredibly difficult, almost impossible.
Yet every great artist once stood before a blank canvas with a trembling hand, not knowing where to begin. The difference between a dream and reality lies in taking that first step and in understanding what you are doing.
